I wrote and illustrated this book as a celebration of my hometown, Traverse City, Michigan. The Legend of the Cherry Prince is a children’s picture book that honors the landscape, traditions, and community spirit of Traverse City. The story offers a straightforward message about responsibility, local heritage, and how ordinary people—especially children—can help protect the places they care about.

The book follows a young boy who is unexpectedly crowned the Cherry Prince. Along with the title, he is given a set of magical cherries said to hold special powers. When developers threaten the town’s cherry orchards, the boy initially hopes these magical gifts will provide an easy solution. Instead, he comes to understand that real change requires action, collaboration, and the willingness to speak up. The story encourages young readers to consider how they can contribute to their own communities and why preserving local traditions matters.

This project has personal roots. I was the first grade Cherry Prince for Long Lake Elementary School during the 1974 National Cherry Festival. That experience—riding in three parades, celebrating the town’s cherry industry, and seeing how deeply the region values its agricultural identity—inspired the narrative and the accompanying artwork. Every illustration is informed by memories of Northern Michigan’s landscapes, orchards, and small-town atmosphere.

Suitable for ages 4–9, this book works well for family reading, classroom discussions about community and conservation, or as a meaningful keepsake for anyone connected to Traverse City or the Cherry Festival’s history.
